ISLAMABAD: The Dasu Hydropower Project is set to become Pakistan’s largest electricity-producing hydropower facility in terms of annual energy generation once completed, significantly strengthening the country’s renewable energy capacity.

According to details shared by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), the project will have a total installed capacity of 4,320 megawatts. Upon completion, it is expected to generate approximately 21 billion units (kWh) of electricity annually, making it one of the most significant hydropower developments in the country.

Located in the northern region of Pakistan, the mega project is designed to play a vital role in enhancing energy security and reducing the country’s reliance on expensive imported fuels for electricity generation.

The project is being developed in two phases. Power generation from the first phase is expected to begin in 2028, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s long-term energy planning and expansion of clean energy resources.

In addition to electricity generation, the project is also contributing to socio-economic development in nearby areas. Under the Confidence Building Measures (CBM) and Local Area Development initiatives, a total of 31 development schemes have already been completed to improve infrastructure and public facilities for local communities.

The construction phase has also created significant employment opportunities, with around 7,000 jobs generated so far, providing economic support to thousands of families in the region.

Energy experts believe that once operational, the Dasu Hydropower Project will play a key role in expanding Pakistan’s hydropower capacity, supporting sustainable economic growth, and helping the country move toward a cleaner and more reliable energy mix.
